Among the deceased was the matatu conductor. Several other passengers also sustained injuries.
Nyakach OCPD Laurinus Odinga revealed that the accident occurred on a sharp bend, and the parked trailer had no warning signs.
“The area has a sharp bend, and the driver of the PSV collided with the trailer without knowing, killing four passengers,” Odinga said.
He added that two pupils from Ober Boys Boarding Primary School in Homa Bay and the conductor died on the spot, while another pupil was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nyabondo Mission Hospital, where the injured were rushed for treatment.
Odinga confirmed that a total of 14 other pupils sustained injuries due to the impact and are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.
The vehicle had picked up the pupils from their school as part of an arrangement with the school management and was en route to Kisumu for a drop-off.
The bodies have since been transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Kisumu.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition to prevent such accidents.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
